THE FUTURE OF LISTENING
DOMES FM, Melodic Distraction & SHOP Preston, UK
May 2022 - October 2023

The Future of Listening is an audio archive of 19 ancient woodlands threatened by the development of the HS2 Phase 2b train line. The work considers how we attribute value to our (post) nature spaces beyond economics and extraction, whilst proposing listening as a form of ecological activism.

Presented in radio broadcasts on DOMES FM / Melodic Distraction and as a spatialised sound exhibition (7:1) at SHOP Preston. The installation was purposefully co-designed with Lee Ivett of Baxendale Architects to facilitate a deep listening experience. Imagined as a discursive space, participants were invited to immerse themselves in the experience, before sharing their responses over a cup of  healing tea, made from the foraged nettles and blackberry leaves of Bollin Bank Wood.

The installation was created using recycled materials and following the exhibition, was deconstructed and donated to the UCLAN Architecture studios to be repurposed.

You can listen to the archive on soundcloud. For the spatialised audio, headphones will provide the best experience.
