Tribu de Trueno
Equerra Urban Nature Reserve, Argentina
November 2024 - December 2024
Residing at the Tribu de Trueno artist residency was a portal to a new dimension. Field recording became an extended form of listening, utilising a range of microphones to invite speculation into sound worlds happening beyond our human ears.
These inter-species encounters invited me into the world of the Llao Llao fungi, a species that has been given many human names - Cyttaria hariotii, Sweet Sweet, Pan de Indio and (most sceptically) Darwin’s Fungus - embedded in the heritage of the Mapuche, possibly the mother of all beers and most recently, the star of newly installed ‘mycrotourism’ trails.
I began to consider what the inner world of this fungi might be. Drawing on it’s symbiotic relationship with the Northofagus tree, how it might communicate with surrounding species and it’s contribution to the rich bio-diversity of Northern Patagonian forests.
‘Llao Llao Squeezes, Sweet Sweet Suck’ is an experimental sound collage seeking to encapsulate this wondering.
Exhibited at Casa Golondrinas, Fundación Balseiro (Bariloche, Argentina) during Semana del Hongo, April 2025. LISTEN HERE.
