ART IN STROKE RECOVERY
Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, UK
& Trafford General Hospital
2013 - 2018

Culture Club was part of the award-winning arts and health programme at the Whitworth Art Gallery, for five years I was embedded within a hospital ward, working alongside physical and occupational therapists to design art processes that could support patient’s recovery from stroke. The activities were inspired by handling boxes that could be borrowed from the gallery and aimed to stimulate physical dexterity, fine motor skills, cognitive function as well as mental health and emotional wellbeing.

The work was part of a research study undertaken by UCL Culture and informed the Cultural First Aid Kit published by the University of Manchester.  The project culminated in the training of newly appointed activity co-ordinators, so that the learning from the project could continue to be sustained into the future.
